We don't have a general /lit/core list. The ones you see are shitty troll lists. We have a few decent specialized lists, though. Here, take this novella one.

You don't seem to have any Japanese lit on there. I suggested a few threads back that you might try Kokoro by Natsume Soseki as an intro book - it's not much over 200 pages. There are also a few Japanese authors on the novellas Recommended Reading chart - Yukio Mishima, Yasunari Kawabata, Junichiro Tanizaki - that you could try out as well.

You could also look into some short story collections, those tend to not be very long.

If you're having trouble, start by reading some of these. They're shorter, so it has to tell the story a bit faster than a full novel. After a while, you might find some authors you like, and you can move on to their novels from there! :D
