Is this it? All the emotions, feelings, pain, happiness, and sorrow? Every mournful thought, every spark of genius, every religious experience, all as an agglomeration of neurons and synaptic fibers, all emergent from a source of physical material? Or is there more?

This is gonna sound like a fucking travesty, and it kind of is, but read the first section of the plot on Wikipedia. This takes away from the discovery element of reading but does nothing to rob the book of any prose/humor/tone etc. This way you know what events are occurring even when they are temporally obfuscated, ie a single event occurring over many pages with dialogue throughout. I don't think the plot in GR is something that can really be spoiled, at least the way it reads doesn't lead you to any sort of grand discovery or revelation.
Reading the study version of Shakespeare really helped me in high school because I was always thinking, 'this is cool and all, but what the fuck just happened?' The study page on the left stated in very clear terms what was occurring and the text on the right had fellows ejaculating at one another and such.

Suppose a dog, overcome with weakness & hunger, were to come across a slaughterhouse, and there a dexterous butcher or butcher's apprentice were to fling him a chain of bones — thoroughly scraped, without any flesh, smeared with blood. What do you think: Would the dog, gnawing on that chain of bones — thoroughly scraped, without any flesh, smeared with blood — appease its weakness & hunger?

Not even if it rained gold coins
would we have our fill
of sensual pleasures.
'Stressful,
they give little enjoyment' —
knowing this, the wise one
finds no delight
even in heavenly sensual pleasures.

prove to me that fiction isn't just useless chatter.

(unless it is intended to be used as a means to express a worthy goal, a path toward that goal, or a guide to ethical conduct)
