I fucking hate the term pretentious.
Not to go full prescriptivist, but I'm going to anyways.

If there are no pretense, then something cannot be pretentious.
It makes no fucking sense. That word corresponds to no linguistic meaning what so ever when you say "pretentious" and have no idea what pretense you are referring to.

How the fuck can something pretend to be deeper than it is if you cant point to how something is pretending to be deeper than it is.
"big words" and "fancy theories" cannot be pretentious if they are actually contained in the book.

calling interpretations "pretentious" makes no fucking sense because an interpretation is always what it is prima facia.


If the author says "oh man this book is supposed to save a generation!" you could say thats pretentious if you argue there is no evidence of any attempt at such a thing in the book.
But just saying something is pretentious in an unfounded manner with no argument is obfuscatory emotional bullshit.

Its literally pretentious to use the word pretentious with no pretense
