Seriously, I just received a book about how the late medievals viewed money and its purpose in society. Just how much social use am I going to get out of that?

How important is the 'hook' and the speed with which the story gets to the inciting incident to you? Do any of the books you liked start out slow?

I'm writing a book and that huge, intriguing opening just isn't there, and I'm almost okay with it. I'm writing a horror story that I want to be brooding and miserable and creepy, and a slow rising and falling motion seems to be a better option than just diving right into the terror.
