Anything that talks about an existing work and gives its own downstream, parasitic view counts as lit crit, which is a subset of art criticism in general, a significant cultural activity. This ranges from book reviews to monographs. Lots of the stuff churned out in the past few decades is academic. Books about books and meta-theories about books aren't exactly normie/midwit fodder (beyond the most basic popular treatments, which would be difficult to market). It's a very jewy mental activity, mirroring the production of the Talmud itself as a series of commentaries which feed on each other (Derrida himself intentionally formatted his Glas, randomly throwing Hegel and Genet together, to look like tractate blatt). And then of course Wittgenstein had his own Tractatus, itself nested comments, though that one isn't a work of lit crit.

Some of the names that tend to pop up a lot are Eagleton, Jameson, Bakhtin, Adorno and Benjamin. I have a reductive interest in a certain book series but I bet eastern countries have a big tradition of the form too.

Sorta wanna add this one (TWO volumes) to my collection at some point but I want to pick off a bunch of the cheap ones first on coupon day. Another desired volume is the late Negt volume on more public sphere stuff per Habermas, but as it's more desirable, it costs.

Haven't read, seems quite difficult on a flip-through. Habermas quotes a passage in Theory of Communictive Action for some reason or other, I'd have to look it back up.

Found "Ideologies of Adventure" (both volumes) in the shop the other day, I was surprised.
