What are some good private detective stories?

Specifically private detectives rather than actual cops. Can be novels, short story series, or whatever. This is just a genre I've never read before and looking to expand my horizons.

I've read enough of the original stuff and want to branch out to the more modern stuff.

Why is there no flow-chart for Gothic lit?

We should rectify that in this thread, but I'm not familiar enough with the genre to contribute beyond "Start with Otranto" which is part of why I want such a chat.

I've got seven short stories that Idk what to do with. Never gotten any real comments on my writing from anyone and I kinda need to know if I'm worth a damn.

1. Do you believe the "you have a million bad words you have to get out before you get to the good ones" concept?
2. If you do, is it literally any fiction you've written in your life, or does the shit doodling you did as a teenager and never finished not count?

I'm sure we've all heard the expression "writers write." For the longest time I thought if you wanted to be a fiction writer that meant you had to write (at least mainly) fiction, but now I'm wondering(and probably already have realized) if that's actually the case.

I agree with the general "adverbs are not your friend" philosophy. But what I have discovered is a way to sneak them in and I can't tell if it actually works, or if I'm just retarded.
