Also, just finished so I'm thinking.
>Oedipus is basically treated as semi-divine in Thebes before everyone discovers his family tree is a circle.
>Then he is shunned because incest is something only the gods are supposed to do.
>But then by the end of the play Oedipus is once again semi-divine and goes through a mini-apotheosis
>Also the gods promise to ruin the lives of everyone he doesn't like.
So was Oedipus sort of an abused god the whole time, or was this more of a "Welcome to the party!" scenario where the gods recognized one of their own after the fact.

Only in the pre-christian world did tragedy hold any meaning. In the Christian world tragedy was impossible to reconcile with and lost. Christ's victory over death was also the victor over tragedy. His passion cannot be viewed as a tragedy, despite what Christians say, because of his ultimate overcoming of death. Real tragedy belongs to the likes of Oedipus. In our post-christian world one would think that the death of god would have paved the ways for tragedy to emerge from its ancient ruins, but because of our failures of dealing with nihilism it cannot be so yet. Until we can overcome nihilism, tragedy will remain hidden from us.

What would the defeat of nihilism be like? It would be to dance with a flaming passion in the face of life; because life ultimately is the greatest tragedy.

Why the fuck did he do it? Why did Oedipus tear out his eyes, and why did Sophocles write this into the play? Also who is your favorite Greek playwright?

I've been reading the Odyssey, and just read Odysseus encounter with the shadow of Oedipus' mother. I always thought that the whole story was created by Sophocles, but it's quite clear now that it must come from Greek tradition. How much of the plays by the three tragediographers is tradition, and how much is actual creative innovation?

That's the facade that you're living behind - it's not the truth. For you, philosophy is an escape. How can you even apply or truly comprehend what you're reading if you have no life through which to do so?
>Justice is the interest of the stronger
Between Mom's kitchen and your bedroom, where might have you encountered this idea? Your books? That's a good start - but again, it's not real. There's no concreteness for you, no experiential confrontation with such an idea. How then could you possibly digest it? If you had a life, it would contribute to your understanding of such ideas, and such ideas could contribute to your understanding of life. But as it stands, this is just an escape for you. An excuse.
>but im seeking reason
No, puer aeternus, you're running away.
>Some pueri aeterni escape from the mother by means of...."thought airplanes" - going off into the air with some kind of philosophical theory or intellectual system.
>It is probably a last attempt on the part of the men to save their masculinity.
>They can slip out from under [their mother's] skirt into the realm of the intellect, where she cannot follow.
>...it is an initial attempt to escape the mother's power and the animus pressure by getting into the realms of books and philosophical discussion, which they think mother does not understand...

was it because killing your father and marrying your mother was considered shocking at the time?
was it because repeating the same themes over and over again made it look all artsy and theatrical?
was it because it was one of the only two Greek books on the high school reading list?
I read this book 7 years ago, should I shove it in the "you'll only truly understand it when you're 40" pile along with Catcher in the Rye? because that's also the popular trash pile.
