Why did everyone, especially the German Idealists, hate Jean-Jacques Rousseau so much?

Why was he so obsessed with the unnatural and the unknown? Has his works elucidated our understanding, or at least the inchoate conception, of the unknowable? I am not too familiar with his works or any of this sort.
