Finished this book yesterday.

Thoughts? I read all the big dostos except for Bros K and I think it may be the lowest for me. Not that it's bad, the others are just better. This one felt too centered around politics and while I understand that's a big theme for him in general, usually it just emerges from the characetrs and their actions. Here everything is politics and you even get some ridiculous scenes like Shatov's wife coming back, being all worked up cause she's fucking giving birth and the main thing she wants to know from Shatov after so long is if it's true that "he's a slavophil". I mean come on really?

Other than this, I felt like the book lacked the big scenes that other works from him have, it only picked up towards the end.

It's still good, just I preferred his other stuff.

I started reading Literature in 2017 and last year I've read Demons. Now I can't find any book that even comes close to that and I'm starting to get frustrated. Why Dosto, why did you write a book so good it can't be surpassed?

But I'm barely reading it.

I'm a hundred pages into this. When does it get good?

Usually I hate cover art that depicts a person.

Tell it to be straight /lit/ -- what is the best translation of Dostoevsky's Demons? I am reading the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation, but it feels clunkier than their usual stuff.

According to Ronald Hingley, Demons is one of Dostoevsky's "greatest onslaught on Nihilism", and "one of humanity's most impressive achievements—perhaps even its supreme achievement—in the art of prose fiction."

I want to get the fullest, smoothest reading experience. So, which translation would you recommend?

Do people like Stavrogin from Demons actually exist? It seems like such a bizarre psychology, yet it's plausible.

This shit slaps. The final speaker for the literary reading at the fête is hilarious. It's like some proto-kafkaesque comedy. Dostoyevsky, you've done it again.

I mean I enjoy any person who identifies themselves as someone who intervenes with another anonymous person, who possibly doesn't mind the ramtidal errors and the senses material that may have been written , but the over all post...without being a person who just looks for mistakes (sad and makes me think your trying to look learned or living on a frequency level vibrating at a higher speed which makes you a dimensional reality above the rest of us living breathing flesh sacks. The one that has the morality tale of the satanic anarchist Sergey Nechayev, author of Catechism of a Revolutionary. Nechayev was the world's most authentic avatar of the satanic, the fictional retelling of his life makes a good novel.

Just picked up a copy of this, but rarely see it discussed on /lit/ compared to his other works. What to expect/be looking for?
