I see Buddhism characterized as nihilistic for its repudiation of desire, observation that suffering is a constant of reality, "goal" of the dissolution of the self, the emphasis on emptiness, etc. But I have a feeling this is only in comparison to what Abrahamized westerners expect out of religion: a promise of a heavenly afterlife and some kind of relationship with God.

Is the nihilism of Buddhism based in any truth? Is it just a western misunderstanding or projection?
