Either Rowling is endorsing the idea that gender is something inherent to the brain divorced from the physical body, like transexuals insist, or Rowling is advocating that sex change operations are a fraud and just because you chopped your willy off and take hormones it doesn't make you a girl. Or it was just a cute adventure story for children and Rowling had not considered the philosophical implications for 1 second but now actual adults are referring to it as if interpreting a holy text.
