ITT: We post the most depressing works of literature that we have had the pleasure of reading.

From what I've gathered, it seems the Russians, Japanese and late Victorians had a knack for it.

The chaos and helplessness (based partially on the author's own experiences) represented in this book make it a worthy starter for this thread.

If people contribute I'll continue posting recommendations.

Let's do it /lit/, let's make an essential war chart.

Here's what I've accumulated so far, feel free to add titles of recommendations. Hopefully someone who has the skill can eventually formulate a chart

Discuss, recommend and all that shit.

I was thinking we could arrange it by major conflicts throughout history

Picture is one of my recommendations. Hopefully wake up to this thread with some input

JAPANESE WORLD WAR II LITERATURE

WHY IS THERE SO FEW TITLES ABOUT IT? OR AT LEAST ONES TRANSLATED. IS IT TOO RISKY FOR A JAPANESE PUBLISHER TO PUBLISH THAT SUBJECT MATTER?

FOR THOSE INTERESTED, HERE ARE TITLES I`VE READ ABOUT THE SUBJECT

THE HARP OF BURMA
FIRES ON THE PLAIN
AND CURRENTLY READING GRASS FOR MY PILLOW

So kids. This is my first post on /lit/. But guess what? I just finished Fires on the Plain after about 3 months of reading. Fucking finished it. And you know what? Possibly the best book I've ever read, I think it ties with Jitterbug Perfume. What do you folks have to say about it?

Heh, good to see I've remembered what you like.

I'm Capsguy by the way.

If we're going for the depressing side of literature I'll throw these in:

Fires on the Plain - picture related
The Book of Disquiet - Pessoa
Black Rain - Ibuse
Grass on the Wayside - Soseki
Anything by Emile Zola

Why doesn't Fires on the Plain get more love on here? It's one of my favorite reads, and definitely the most satisfying to me.

I, for one, was immersed by Doctor Zhivago and the characters in it. Although I'm also fanatical in my readings of Russian literature, especially considering I also have a taste for the bleak, which this novel has. The chaos, confusion and barbarity that swept through Russia and the connecting states was depicted quite soundly by Pasternak with the ensuing calamities that befell the average families caught in the middle.

The imagery and poetry (both actual poetry and poetic prose) were vivid and at times heart-wrenching. I can understand why you wish it received more recognition on /lit/, as it is a good book.

I'm horrible with discussing books, but if you want books that you love to receive more mention on a place like /lit/, you're going to have to put in more effort than that.

/lit/, I want to read dark and relatively in-depth psychological novels and I do not know where to look.

I've worked through Dostoevsky, Mishima, Nabokov, Henry James, hell even Conrad and Stendhal.

Out of the list, probably Mishima and Dostoevsky did it best, for what I am looking for. I love cynical characters.

Greatly appreciated.

Picture kind of unrelated, but quite the trip.
