Reading Plato I realized that he actually had an aversion towards poets (or rather, some specific poets), and only wrote dialogues like the Symposium in order to show his contemporaries that what Homer was doing was something simple and that he could do it without difficulty.
And recently I also discovered that there are quite a few scientists like Dirac who have a low opinion of poetry.

What Plato says is that poetry is far from the truth, and like painting, they are only imitations. But his opinion of music was different, perhaps because in music you can make use of mathematics and it is less subjective than literature.

Who can explain to me why they had a bad opinion of poetry?.
