What is the relationship between the difficulty of a work and its merit?

I am reading The Recognitions now and have to use a guide to understand most of the allusions. I am enjoying it, however it has brought me to consider texts like Don Quixote, The Master and Margarita and Barabbas. I suppose the would rank those in order of stylistic difficulty, at least in so far as they have been translated. Obviously, they are all highly praised novels but are they all great writers? It is difficult to say the simple style of something like Barabbas is on the level of an intricate work like The Recognitions.

Do you feel the transition coming? I don't. I don't give a shit. That's what I'd say if I didn't give a shit. I'm just hiding my shit behind five layers.

3. False Persona
4. A psychoanalytic glare
5. Reactionary culture

I hope they never figure out that I could tear it down. I hope they do figure out that I'm not trying to. Maybe then I could finally surround myself with decent company. And in decent I mean lacking the mind-qualities of decency. The freedom of whatever. If you criticize me I'll make you feel like a moron. Because it's something you worry about. Because you have certain ideas about what a thing should be. Me, I'm just good will hunting.
