I've never taken a look at any of Ayn Rand's work, and I've only read up on her a tiny bit. What is she about, and why is everyone so critical of her beliefs and her work?

Where did it go wrong? I liked part one, but somewhere in part two it just become more and more ridiculous.

Did anyone think a secret society of rich people doing medial jobs hidden from the world was like something out of a South Park episode?

I recently had an incredibly annoying conversation with an objectivist where I tried, unsuccessfully, to convince him that plopping a seventy page speech in the middle of a novel completely ruins any sort of narrative and that such a thing should not be done by any writer, regardless of skill. I didn't say a word about Rand's philosophy, or the quality of her writing. All I tried to say is that the speech was a very bad idea and that she should have either published the speech separately, or that she shouldn't have written a novel in the first place.

Am I wrong? I mean...none of the things that I said to him penetrated in any way shape or form, and I couldn't seem to get him to understand what I was trying to say. Am I totally missing something, or is the world lacking all logical cohesion and collapsing into absolute chaos where the rules of good writing no longer exist?

Hey /lit/, I'm considering reading Atlas Shrugged. I know this is an extremely controversial book and I apologise in advance if this thread stirs up shit.

Basically, I've heard a lot about how bad it is and I have a sort of morbid curiosity about it. What's the plot about? What are the philosophical ideas it preaches, and what makes them flawed?

Is Atlas Shrugged worth reading even if it is bad?

Is Ayn Rand really that bad? I hear a lot of vitriol directed towards her but is Atlas Shrugged really that appalling?

Is it worth reading anything by her? If so should I start with The Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged?

I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged, and I can't for the life of me figure out why everyone hates it so much. Most of the negative remarks about it are baseless statements about "That book is for 14-year-olds," but after reading it I don't understand why. In negative criticisms, it seems like reviewers' Christianity gets in the way of agreeing with anything in the book because of its atheist views. Can someone give me a good reason why this book should be considered as bad as it is?

tl;dr Why do so many people hate Atlas Shrugged?

Could someone please explain the significance of Aristotle's three laws of formal logic in Atlas Shrugged, particularly the synonymizing of the three parts of Rand's book to these three laws? I'm having a hard time discerning the relevance
