The same criticism could be said about Harry Potter or any of the genre fiction out there, trying to view fantasy lit with the same lens as literary fiction, is like trying to judge a fish by it's ability to climb a thing. The pretentious try to judge GRRM as if he was setting out to write War and Peace or Notes from the Underground, when in reality he was writing a story were people have magical pet wolves and dragons. Only a fool would get so seriously angry while analyzing a fantasy novel. If anything, the amount of Literati rage proves that ASOIAF is worth reading because it makes the coffee swilling Tolstoy fans so uncomfortable. They are just fantasy novels that people take too seriously because they are better than the average fantasy novel, which in literary terms isn't saying much at all.

By now everything has been done before
This poem included, that is for sure
Drinking coffee after coffee after coffee after coffee
To make a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy

Even that line was something borrowed from the movies
Addin' inter-textuality to deter scrutinies
Name drop something post-modern, give illusion of depth
Baudrillard’s mortal enemy: the shallowness of breadth

Amass cultural capital, consume ‘til you’re sizable
Then mash it together, til its unrecognisable
With some skill and much luck, you'll have something 'new'
At least until closer inspection of you

But break any creation to constituent parts
At best: a new face, for an unoriginal heart
Artists tried to crystallise the universal for too long
So existentialism's the echo of a long played out song

Spare a tear for the tragedy of mediocre youth
For whom clichés and platitudes are as good as the truth
Then there's me, who though the trick was to get meta
Defensive irony's all I got - but can you do much better?
