I'm honestly becoming disappointed in classical literature. Dostoevsky may have had a few great ideas to chew on, but was the entire love drama in "The Idiot" necessary? Or, well perhaps the same argument with writers like Zola and Steinbeck who focused their writing on their society, was it necessary to sugar coat all their works with drama? The drama takes away from the reality of the events depicted, for me at least.

Perhaps you could say reading works of Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins would obviously reflect better simply because they were written in the time period I live. But writers of today like Murakami, Stephen King, Cormac Mccarthy, and David F. Wallace seem to offer my life very little besides a distraction.
