I wholeheartedly agree.
If you're marketing in a first-world nation, you're selling a product. Seeing as how a majority of the public tends to side with things of 'common' interest (i.e. celebrity gossip, oh-no-you-didn't rhetoric, etc.) then your best bet is to write something they would buy.
No one is going to buy your compendium of philosophical rants or novels on teenage angst that lasted well into your late 20's.

If you want to sell, you need to write something people will read...if you happen to like what you write, then that's a plus. Congrats.
