When I was young we would go to the brand new downtown library. There were events and tons of books for me and my families interests. In school libraries were fun because I could escape from the rest of the students. But in highschool 05-09, my friends and I were the computer nerds playing video games all the time. Reading stopped being the escapist pastime. In law school I hung out in the law library mostly because it was where the students would go to study and escape the undergrad side of campus.

Non university or school related libraries have become hobo centers for those without internet access. It’s sad to see and homelessness should really be a higher priority, but I don’t think the modern libraries attempt at broadening appeal is going to work. This thread proves it. Those that want to read more than romance novels can’t find the book they want and even if they can, they have to go through the minefield of those oppressed by capitalism. I’d rather just buy or libgen a book than go out of my way to a library. They aren’t for the community of intellectuals anymore, save for those at universities.
