Finnegans Wake is, quite deliberately, a Koan for the Occident. Stop ridiculing people for their curiosity, even if their reach exceeds their grasp.

Hello /lit/.
I'm writing a 600 word short narrative for my uni Narrative study class, which I then have to discuss. The discussion means that I have to cram it with a fair few narrative conventions so I have something to write about. I'm fitting in Analepsis/Prolepsis, repetition of events, equilibrium and disequilibrium, and discrepancy between plot and story.

I just wanted to show you a quick plot outline, tell me what you think. I doubt i'll do any direct quoted dialogue, I'll probably stick to descriptions and the thoughts of the characters. I'm not giving the two characters names, I'd rather just keep it at "he" and "she"

His perspective
Two friends meet by the beach in the drizzling rain. They walk along for a while, chatting. It is hinted they have been in a relationship. He constantly thinks of the past, and their history together. They see a drowning man hauled from the water, and unsuccessfully recussitated. They know eachother too well to pretend to care about him. As they leave, he feels depressed about their meeting.

Her perspective
Two friends meet by the beach in the drizzling rain. She is concerned about him somewhat, but does not mention it. She has obviously moved on quicker than he has. She thinks more about the future, with a couple of glimpses into her future life. They see a drowning man hauled from the water She chooses to leave before they find out whether the man is dead or not. As they leave, she feels happier that they met on the beach.

I highly, highly highly highly recommend to people in this thread this:

The first page is hard. literally, it's an atom exploding and a river flowing and the second paragraph tells you the entire story of the novel and then it goes into full dreamland mode by page 4, the second page of the book. if you can't at least get to mutt and jute, you're not trying. by page 30 the book has given you the keys to read it, and there's so much going on inside....

Ok, that gorgeous first paragraph is the first section of the tristan and isolde section of FW. yes, joyce is trolling... the second section doesn't come until II.4. And then, it's all mashed up with the mamalujo sketch about the authors of the four gospels. but that's why the second paragraph starts off in one direction, before bending the image to be HCE, and turning the narrative inwards to the family. by page 8 you'll be in the museyroom of family history.

also, have you guys noticed yet that every edition of FW has identical pagination? very helpful when consulting guides.
