What do you think M&D is "about", on a thematic level? I finished a reading and was left very ponderous.

To me it's about the "ending" of history, and the transition of the world from one with shadowy, unknowable horizons, to one wholly documented and understood. Throughout the entire book is the act of compartmentalizing, hell the very thing M&D themselves are doing is, quite literally, compartmentalizing the world. What was once a wild, untamed new world, brimmed with unknown culture and mystery, teeming with life, is now simply divided by a line on the map, into what is yours and what is mine. No more mystery. That land over there? We know what it is, because we know who it belongs to.

You can blow this up on a larger scale and look at the information age as a whole, the (seeming) understanding of our time because we have data and ways to access it, which will only continue to get better. The things we don't know? Well, we just don't have the data on them yet.

The world has been bathed in a floodlight, there is no mystery. Everything is explainable on our own terms and we satisfied with the explanations we give them. Anything outside of the floodlight isn't worth considering, since our methods of measurement can't begin to touch them.

Do you think I'm on the right path? I'm just thinking out loud. I enjoyed reading this book. What did you think?
