very based, what are your favorite PKD books anon? for me it's A Scanner Darkly and VALIS. I know these two are certainly more of his well known books so I'd be curious about the "oddball" stuff he has that you enjoy. I own a copy of Clans of the Alphane Moon that I've yet to read but I suspect it's pretty pulpy. and thing about Dick that doesn't totally sell me is his writing - it almost reminds me of William Gibson - it can be incredibly hard to follow just what exactly is going on, who is talking, etc etc. Some people chalk that up to "well anon his crazy writing is representative of the craziness of reality" blah blah, but yea I don't know..

checked and I should take a page from you. i do the exact opposite. literally before I read VALIS I read all about PKDs life.. then I read a bunch of shit on Gnosticism. maybe I got more out of my VALIS read by doing so.. but surely I also tainted it a bit

Maybe, I don't remember, but the ideas sure stick out. we're in /sffg/, sure I want good writing but I'm here for the ideas when it comes to sci-fi and I'm willing to deal with subpar writing. It's why I give PKD a pass on his writing.

VALIS is probably one of PKDs best but it's a head trip and weird and gnostic so you should expect that and/or at least be interested in it. I personally love it. Revelation Space is also very good but a completely different vibe: dark, technical, grand-scale sci-fi.

Philip K Dick. His prose is borderline shit but there's something about him and his whole things-aren't-what-they-seem shtick. Seems like he had a bit of a rough but interesting life, too. I own about ten of his books.
