Nothing can really teach you it, you have to slowly get into the habit of being more and more dedicated and disciplined.

You can try Meditations by Marcus Aurelius or An Iron will by Orson Swett Marden

What pieces of writing were forever seared into your memory the moment you read them?

For me it's the parts in V. where Pynchon talks about the Namibian death camps. It's so fucking vivid and such a contrast to his typically goofy self.

I just finished the first chapter of this. What the fuck? Why was Benny tacking condoms to people's doors? Was Rachel really giving a handjob to the gearstick of her car?

Are there any good guides to this book? I can't figure out what the fuck is happening half the time and the other half I can't figure out why.

Dare I say, I found Gravity's Rainbow easier. Gravity's Rainbow was propped up on now widely understood knowledge of World War 2. The factions involved, some of the people, places events. The V-2 rocket and Von Braun, which we all know of from the American Space project. And one central character - Tyrone Slothrop, on a very simple quest. There were many anchors in a reality with GR. The central themes were clear, for all the novel's complexity.

In V., I see what happens, but I don't see the significance. I can't predict where it's going, I rarely understand what Stencil is doing, and by god, I have no idea what the focus is here. What's really being said. Thematics. Theeeemaaaatiiiics

Well, at least it's funny.

I'm about to start venturing in to the work of Thomas Pynchon. I am choosing to start at the beginning: V. Is this a good start? Has anyone read it?

I usually recommend V. when asked for a recommendation.

It's hard (yes, for the average reader it is), but not too hard if the person is determined enough. It's a great experience.

I don't get it.

I mean, I do get everything, the sentences, what he was talking about, the things and events he was describing, there was nothing complicated like that, but I still don't GET it.

What was the point of this? What was the point of all the "side stories" and "side characters" that never got proper character development? What was the point of all the two to ten episodes with random people that disappeared after that and were never mentioned again?

What's the point of anything in this book? What's the moral of the story?

Is it just 2deep4me? Am I supposed to keep track of every character and when different things are happening/referenced/meaningful?

I get that the whole "collage of different viewpoints" is cool, and it's interesting that almost every chapter is written from the perspective of a different character, but I honestly just have no idea what's going on 200 pages in. Each collage of perspectives seems to focus in and buildup on a certain event, but when that event finally comes, I fail to see the significance of it, or how it affects the "present day" characters like Profane or the Sick Crew.

Any advice? Thoughts on the novel? Is Pynchon a hack?

This may be the best book I've ever read. There's just so much to it, but it all comes together without seeming contrived or scatterbrained.

Guess I'm the only one who enjoyed the typeface and print in this version of V.
Everyone hates on it but it really grew on me.
Shame about the cover though, it's so ugly. Anyone know if you can still get pic related anywhere?
