Probably a silly question, but have you read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea? I think it could be just the book for an armchair marine biologist (I mean to say this in the most respectable way) or naturalist.

>I am trying to get into literature but there are just too many words with too little happening. Pointless description and pontification. No epic twists and turns. No cute girls. No fun banter and comedic shenanigans.
Do you want to know how I know that you are a zoomer? Also, to answer your question, read something from Agatha Christie like Then There Were None; or Jules Verne's books like Around the World in Eighty Days. Verne's books even have original illustrations.

>I also ask if PDFs are really bad for you, especially in comparison to real books
Why would they be? If they contain the same lines of text and the same information then what could be the problem? Also might I recommend the .epub format? Those come out better on ereader softwares in my experience.
>advice/how you read your books.
I don't know how to answer a question like this. How do I read? I simply look at the words and sentences and consume the information within the lines of text. Sometimes I imagine or mutter the words out loud under my breath if it helps me keep my attention better. I also try to paint scenes in my mind using my imagination. I find that reading in my home in bed or on my couch offers a good environment for reading but if I'm tired that level of comfort sometimes causes me to begin falling asleep, which in turn means I should just go to sleep instead of reading or doing something else.
