I know the canon for Greeks and for Romans, but what about for other cultures? Are there lists/charts for Germans? or English? Where does bible fit in? By itself before Italians? Do italians even have a worthwhile canon?

I like reading books from one culture at a time, not switching between Germans and English that weren't even reading each other.

I recently read "The Republic" and it was pretty much all non-sense.

The Positive
I like the idea of separating objects into their aspects and judging each aspect to derive at a conclusion about the object as a whole, but that's on a meta level. He didn't even explicitly state that idea. And the rest is so much trash.

Problem A
Why did we write a story and have one of the characters say "why?", "tell me more", "I must agree" etc. every few passages. That's just annoying and not necessary.

Problem B
It's riddled with non-sequiturs and arguments that are not sound.
For example, somewhere in the beginning of Book I:
>Do you admit that it is just for subjects to obey their ruler?
>I do.
And the dialogue proceeds from there, having taking this point without any further question. A lot of people would disagree that it's always, no matter what, just to follow what some sort of ruler says. And that goes no matter if the ruler is correct or not. You might argue that people have a right to disobey and that it's just to excercise this right.
The entire book is full of stuff like this. Employing this style of argument you could reverse engineer from any fucking conclusion you want. How is this valid?

Problem C
Esoteric stuff like Lydian poetry being discussed. That's akin to discussing some contemporary k-pop bands in your magnum opus. It's silly.

How is this to be considered one of the best philosophical texts of all time?

Do yourself a favor and don't come back to /lit/ until you've finished most of these.

You're welcome
