it's less overboard than an heroic dose of shrooms I promise (although hard to compare) ...ketamine seems to work its magic directly on the physical structure of the brain: the experiential effects are more of a by-product. A huge amount of research has been done over the last decade and I urge any anons who are feeling suicidal to look into this, it saved my life last year

Therapists don't give advice (good ones anyway). The idea is that they ask questions then allow you to articulate your feelings before bouncing some of your own thoughts back at you, summarising what you've said, and (again, the good ones) knowing when to pry into a particular topic. The process of expressing your nebulous mostly unconscious content into words gives structure to the abstract parts of yourself so that you can start to try to understand yourself and why you are the way you are. Most people are not good listeners, just waiting for their turn to speak. Even if you are lucky to have a friend/family member who is a good listener, you are still unlikely to open up all the way. The whole point is that the therapist is a 'random human being' to whom you can say literally anything. Do it right and it is utterly liberating. Good luck anon.
