Hey /lit/, let's talk about how much we love this book.

So I've been reading this, up to about chapter 16? and I suppose I like it.
But, there's no point to the book. It's just about some guy complaining about his friends and daily life. It's got more angst than a 8th grader's facebook.
What's the deal with this book?

Hey, /lit/. I've been a heavy reader for as long as I can remember, and have always been told I'm a talented writer (from teachers for classes and such). Creatively, I've been growing lately and I really feel the need to start writing creatively for myself, namely short stories. I have the talent, but I really don't know where to start. Pic related, one of my favorites.

Does /lit/ have some sort of recommendation chart for novels like the other boards do?
Looked on /rs/ but couldn't find one.
I've never really read novels seriously. I'm more into non-fiction.

So I finished reading this today.

Damn good book. Probably the best I ever read. Not that I read much.

Didn't know it (originated?) the "I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes."

Also, I don't understand the reference to it in the manga Onanii Master Kurosawa.

What's the deal with this book? I was expecting some cool stuff, not action or thriller but at least some good thoughts or anything like this, but the whole thing was just boring as hell, i can't help but feel that the only reason that is so-much-talked is the John Lennon murder, and only that

This book sucked. Why did it cause so much controversy /lit/?

£1.22 left on my Amazon gift card (Yes I am aware of the other thread), is there ANYTHING worth reading I can get for this? I have Notes from Underground in my basket for £1.25, but what is £1.22 or under?

This. It also doesn't help that some instructors just don't bother to explain why a particular novel is still relevant. If you don't make that connection, it's pretty unlikely that high schoolers will give a shit.

Instructors fuck themselves over by assigning the wrong books. Assign more novels where kids can actually relate to the characters. Pic extremely related. As much as you may hate Holden, you can't deny that he's the epitome of a phase that almost everyone goes through.
