Have it on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to reading it. Is it good enough for me to read next?

Why is this book considered brilliant? It reads like a self insert fanfiction. Literally every famous historical person he meets comments on how smart the aurthor is.

Can you imagine a modern day equivalent of this shit?

Fanfiction is not bad by definition. It's just a medium that attracts bad writers.

Sup /lit/, I need help and you guys are smart.

For my English, I need to write a story that is derived from a famous poem. I was thinking of writing about a captain in a medieval army. After a victorious battle, he hears that the 'Black Death' has been sighted in a village next to his hometown. He rushes home only to find his family dead, and later he is hung for abandoning his post.

Do you guys think this will get a decent mark?

Pic related, it's where i got the idea from.
(Bonus marks for finding the right canto)

Ever thought about socially criticizing a classic book in a book report?

1) Dante's Inferno ->
Classic propaganda piece by the Church.
A) Dante is chastised for "quarreling" or arguing, which is an indictment against criticizing the church.

B) The book claims that people who "deviate form the path" have already lost their souls to Hell, and their current bodies are possessed by demons. It's an obvious, ugly way to de-humanize dissenters so it's easier for the Establishment to murder them.

C) Presents the ludicrous idea that people who give bad advice, adulterers, prostitutes and unbaptized babies deserve eternal damnation.

This becomes an unintended indictment against the Christian concept of hell.
