My boyfriend is making me read this and I can't get through it. It's terrible, right? The writing is clichè and long-winded with minimal action and a slow ass plot. Should I bother finishing it

All my fantasy-reading friends were extremely hyped about Name of the Wind and one of the let me borrow his copy.
Got about two-thirds into the book before I gave up. That was the worst book I've read in a long time.

Interested in finding a new fantasy series to read, and yes I read the sticky, but have either already read those books, attempted to read them and was not interested, or dismissed them outright based off reviews. I understand theres a very strong pretentious streak here and I may get called a pleb, but I just like reading a good story.

Authors I like:
Patrick Rothfuss
Brandon Sanderson
Joe Abercrombie
Glen Cook
Robin Hobb
Robert Jordan
George RR Martin
Brent Weeks

and a shit ton of other authors but these are the ones that came to mind. Would enjoy any suggestions. I didn't like the Malazan series if it helps.

Game of Thrones.

Folks,

Looking for a good fantasy series for my wife and I to read. Things we've enjoyed a great deal are the early books by Eddings, Patrick Rothfuss' books, we enjoyed Harry Potter greatly (say nothing,) and we also enjoyed Song of Ice and Fire.

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hey, /lit/, I'm new to this board and I would like to know what you guys think about fantasy books like The Name of the Wind and The Malazan Book of the Fallen series. I personally prefer the latter but both are god-tier in my opinion. Also, It's been some time since I read something and I wanted to start getting into fantasy again, so what are some good books you would recommend?

What did everyone think of the book? I thought the first half was great, but the 2nd half I expected so much more. First half seemed so impactful, while 2nd half was meh "ima go do this over and over, searching for something awesome but turns out to be a let down". Should i even read book 2?

I thoroughly enjoyed Patrick Rothfuss, and being a relatively new author, his work was a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre.

For any who have yet to read The Kingslayer Chronicles: I would highly recommend it. There isn't a ton of action or magic, as is common in the genre. However, there is a lot of amazing character development, storytelling, and insightful drama.
On a side note... does anyone know a series with a similar "style"?

Has /lit/ read this? At first I was slow on it, but I'm through the second book now and it was great. Normally I'm pretty wary of fantasy written by an overweight neckbeard, and the story does seem to revolve around a Gary Stu at first. Then I realized he was telling his own story, and the couple moments we actually see him doing things and not telling us stories about himself, he doesn't quite live up to his own hype. It definitely adds a layer of complexity to the story.

What are /lit/s thoughts on the Kingkiller Chronicles. They might be my favorite fantasy novels I've ever read. They are beautifully written and I enjoy them immensely.

Are cliches forgivable if a book is written in the first person?

The main character is supposed to be a genius but he talks like a regular college kid and uses modern cliches...

I guess we could argue "thats just how he talks"...

Also why do the characters all talk modern english? The style seems so informal and modern I wouldn't be surprised if they started talking about iPods and youtube...it takes me out of the "fantasy setting"

>pic related

guys,
I'm new to the reading thing. ofcourse I've read before but I've never decided to read a book unless school told me too. now I've got months of time on my hands, can't work, no college 'til september, and I really want to get into books more. so, as an aspiring /lit/fag I decided to get the book Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss because it seemed interesting enough and I've heard good things from a friend.

Opinions?

also, how do I make sure my mind doesn't go drifting off? my attention span tends to be on the short side.

Patrick Rothfuss's Kingkiller Chronicle.

I loved how the main character is obviously flawed, broke as hell, and can't read other people's emotions, but makes up for it with incredible charisma, musical talent, and sheer dumb luck. I like how Rothfuss's concept of Sympathy works. I like the way Siaru sounds.

What did you /lit/erates think of Name of the Wind?

I really liked the emphasis it put on the importance of music and the significant symbolism of the "story" and the allegory of how Kvothe presented it like a play. I also liked the concept of denner resin, the 'sweet-eaters' and whatnot. Over-white teeth is creepy.

My favorite character was Abenthy .

My name is Kvothe, pronounced nearly the same as "quothe." Names are important as they tell you a great deal about a person. I've had more names than anyone has a right to. The Adem call me Maedre. Which, depending on how it's spoken, can mean The Flame, The Thunder, or The Broken Tree.

"The Flame" is obvious if you've ever seen me. I have red hair, bright. If I had been born a couple of hundred years ago I would probably have been burned as a demon. I keep it short but it's unruly. When left to its own devices, it sticks up and makes me look as if I have been set afire.

"The Thunder" I attribute to a strong baritone and a great deal of stage training at an early age.

I've never thought of "The Broken Tree" as very significant. Although in retrospect, I suppose it could be considered at least partially prophetic.

My first mentor called me E'lir because I was clever and I knew it. My first real lover called me Dulator because she liked the sound of it. I have been called Shadicar, Lightfinger, and Six-String. I have been called Kvothe the Bloodless, Kvothe the Arcane, and Kvothe Kingkiller. I have earned those names. Bought and paid for them.

But I was brought up as Kvothe. My father once told me it meant "to know."

I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, although very few were unearned.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.
