Can someone help me understand the meaning of the gods, how the ancients would have perceived it when im reading the introduction of the illiad and its like, apollo killed patroclus, and the hephaestus made achilles some new armor. What is the meaning of saying it was a god who made the armor? Does it mean the god manifested into the human who made it, or is it just an indication that it was such a beautiful piece of armor that it was of hephaestian nature or, how does it make sense in an ancient perspective, how would an ancient person understand this without the smug modern idea of thinking some silly thing. if it's as simple as the literaly god hephaestus came to make some armor, how would a person think of it at the time? Truly understanding the gods is quite difficult. like for example: Apollo: god of sun, doesnt tell you anything.
