It's your first poem. I took that into consideration. He's kind of right, but only somewhat. I'd say learn a bit more about rhyme scheme and meter, learn how to read and write in that style a little, and then you'll kind of get an idea of how to look at the poets that came later, and didn't use it.
Robert Frost is a great example of both, to get you started.
