>part of your grade is participating in class by contributing to class discussion with meaningful and insightful, on topic comments or questions regarding the current subject matter.
>Try not to sperg out and disrupt the class by talking every 10 seconds
>limit myself to no more than 4 comments or questions per hour session, as to let other people speak
>today in class we are discussion and comparing justice, being a just person, and revenge
>Argue that Justice is fabric that upholds the law, which in turn supports a safe and health society
>Professor: LOL SO WHAT YOUR SAYING IS I COULD MURDER YOU RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I VIEW YOU AS A THREAT TO MY SAFETY
>BUT MUH DEFINITION OF JUSTICE IS DIFFERENT THAN YOURS, WHY ARE YOU RIGHT
>explain to him that I'm not speaking from my perspective, but from the establishment perspective at large
>cuts me off and basically says "LOL NO" so I keep quiet the rest of the class

mind you this was the last 20 min of an hour discussion, and I had already heard everyone else talk except me.

I'm willing to accept that I'm fucking stupid/don't have the whole picture but at the very least I'd like to know why.

(Setting: afterlife, in purgatory.)

Hume: I am an Empiricist. Human beings don't have intellects different from the sense. Ideas are only copies from sense experience.
Socrates: If we do not have intellects distinct from the senses, if we only have imagination, then we are only like animals.
Hume: That is indeed my skeptical conclusion.
Socrates: We can obviously conceive as well as imagine.
Hume: Prove it.
Socrates: Can you understand a square and a triangle.
Hume: Yes.
Socrates: Can you understand the difference between them?
Hume: Yes. But only because I can imagine them.
Socrates: Can you understand the difference between a 104 and a 103 sided figure?
Hume: Yes. I can do geometry.
Socrates: Can you imagine the difference. You must be able to if you can understand it, as you say.
Hume: ...
Socrates: Can you imagine a 103-sided figure?
Hume: No.
Socrates: Can you imagine a 104-sided figure?
Hume: No
Socrates: Then how can you understand the difference between them?
Hume: I guess I... can't?
Socrates: Then you cannot understand something you don't imagine.

What are the best steps to take after getting an undergraduate degree in philosophy?

Part of me would like to get into academia and part of me thinks I should have some sort of backup plan.

Hey /lit/.

I'm going to buy 10+ books tomorrow. Help me choose them. I'm interested in Science, Economics and Sociology. But other cool books welcomed too.
Thanks for the help!

I'm seriously considering majoring in philosophy and perhaps even double-majoring in philosophy and another major, which I'm torn between linguistics and some math/science.

Are there real and valid reasons not to major in philosophy? I know that most people champion the fact that it does not prepare you for any specific field of work (such as law school or majoring in a science or engineering), but other than that, I see no reason to not.

Apparently also philosophy majors are hugely smarter than other majors on average, and I also think that it would make me a better person.

And before you say anything, I'm not underage b&, I'm 18 and waiting to submit applications to colleges.

What is /lit/'s opinion on this?

Hey guys. I want to get into philosophy. I'm a complete newbie and I wanted to know what books and/or philosophers I should begin with.

Pic related: Most sources I've consulted said that I should begin with socrates, but are there any specific covering his works that are geared towards laymen such as myself?
