People have already touched on some of the main reasons. I think the overwhelming thing is how hopeless any meaningful change appears to be. What are we meant to do about of this? Vote? The political system seems inoperable and unaccountable to the people. Protest? Grassroots movements tend to fizzle out into embarrassing larps without any meaningful goals or leadership. Social media is increasingly hostile and polarised, you can't just 'stay away' from politics, it's fucking everywhere and bleeds into everything. Everything is culture war bullshit that seems designed to passively feed you ideology and make you think everyone else despises your group. It's exhausting.

The news is the worst. How does anyone stay plugged into that for an extended duration and not go insane? How much mental energy is wasted on things that seem to fade into irrelevance as soon as the media switches its focus. Remember the Mueller report? ISIS? The Iran shit at the start of the year? It seems like we just wake up and one day and something is breaking news and it's the biggest, most dramatic event ever and then a week later we just forget it happened.

Would like to write about how jobs are increasingly abstract, precarious, short-lived and producing little thats tangible, but can't be bothered.
