I have read ~24 volumes. The first batch, maybe books 1-8 are good. Not great, but readable. After that it is pure judgement call. The author's pacing gets way worse and the writing becomes increasingly juvenille. Ex: in one of the newer books there's a scene where some guys antagonize D and D does something cool to stop them and all the observers react about how cool D is. 20 pages later the exact same scenario with D doing the exact same thing happens again and it is played the same way. Show don't tell goes out the window with many characters disappearing for half the story only to show up later and talk about all the cool things that happened and what they discovered. There's also too much of a focus on bittersweet endings, to the point the author will have five survivng characters and kind a way to kill all but D and maybe one of them in the last two pages (yes I meant to write two, it's that retardedly abrupt).
So yeah, by all means read the first couple volumes and buy a few more at a time until you burnout. Don't buy twenty at once you'll regret it.
