The prose amplifies as the story progresses closer and closer to the climax. The siege of Minas Tirith and then the march on the gates of Mordor, for example, has a lot of very heavy, religious/Biblical-sounding emphasis in the language and it's actually pretty powerful imo. But I would say Tolkien's prose is actually quite nice to read in terms of its general fluidity, and how it aptly demonstrates his ability as a story-teller, of which he certainly seems among the foremost in recent times.

Also, normies don't read LOTR, so I am not even sure why you would render such an estimation. Picrel is from Silmarillion which is written far differently in style than LOTR but I still liked it. It doesn't read as good in the vacuum of being an excerpt, I don't think, but it was a great culmination in context of the actual plot point from which it was taken.
