Subject-wise, of course they're different. If you look at their styles, however, there's quite a bit to compare. Saroyan's prose was never as simplistic as Hemingway (who definitely influenced Bukowski, as well), in fact he'd be a closer relative to Dos Passos-- short, clipped statements for impact among larger, expository sentences with few parenthetical points-- but he bears a resemblance to most of that same era of modernist Americans with his love of terse or simplified dialogue with intense undertones.
If you've read much Bukowski, Saroyan's style should seem familiar because of its brevity and "punchline" endings to passages. Bukowski avidly read the writers of that time, and his emulation is obvious.
