There was definitely a larger reading public a hundred years ago, and if you went back to the 1600s practically everyone had a tract or pamphlet in his hand. People became literate for a reason, and even in the 1600s literacy rates were very high in Western Europe. They were higher than the literacy rates in some African countries today.
