If the point of this book was to make us feel bad for the Africans who got their shit taken by white dudes, it definitely didn't work. The villagers in this book were psychopaths.

Books you're supposed to like but never clicked with you.

Pic related. I get that its important to African and colonization literature is great and did a lot towards humanizing tribal culture. But as a read itself there was never anything about it that grabbed me. Characters weren't particularly likable and I was never invested in much of what was going on. Can't help but feeling I just missed out on something considering how lauded it is.

A dead white European male was teaching a class on English literature, known tool of imperialist oppression.
“Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship King Leopold II, greatest monarch the world has ever known, even greater than James Monroe!”

At this moment, a black, female, transgendered, cis-hetero-homoflexible Latino transvestite man who has over 20,000 Tweets and 12,000 Tumblr posts stood up and held up a novel.

“What is this book?”

The professor smirked oppressively and smugly replied “Heart of Darkness, by Polish-British writer Joseph Conrad, an intelligent and insightful study of the primitive mind of the African peoples.”

“Wrong. The book is a racist and oppressive piece of propaganda designed to dehumanize the proud peoples of the African continent. Conrad is a bigot. If the book truly had merit as you claimed, Oprah would’ve reviewed it on her show already.”

The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and Iron Cross. He stormed out of the room crying those DWEM crocodile tears.

The students applauded and all registered Marxist that day and accepted Martin Luther King Jr. as their lord and savior. An okapi pounced into the room and stood next to a south-up map centered around Africa. The students joined hand in hand and sang Toto’s Africa several times, and Jesse Jackson, king of all black people, showed up to enact affirmative action across the country.

The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of a giant black nigger dick up his ass was tossed into the Sahara desert for all eternity.

That student’s name? Chinua Achebe.

Hakuna Matata.

Is this book meant to be a criticism of multiculturalism? Because that's how I understood it. I thought it was surprising and brave to see an African author take such a pro-white stance.

Achebe is one of my favorite cultural fiction authors, Buck is probably the only author I like more in that genre.

Tutuola is one of the best authors to publish anything in the last 50 years.

Cultural diversity in literature is awesome. Where else are you going to read about things such as spirits that crawl inside a woman, pretending to be an infant to intentionally come out stillborn and repeat the process to antagonize her, through the perspective of an MC that sees this as a fact of existence? Shit like that's neat. Pull your head out of your ass.

Pic related is an easy book that helps you realize the good that comes from welcoming christ into your life, as opposed to living a life where you refuse to.

It's set in an African tribal system, and it's about a community that's contacted by missionaries, and the differences between people who welcome them and people who do not. It's very inspirational, and it helped build my faith quite a bit.
