Did successfull authors in the past start with writing short stories before publishing a novel or just jumped straight to writing a novel?

My parents say the proper path is to get short stories published to make a name for yourself. But my friend is writing a fantasy book as his first work.

If I am going to uni to do Maths, how do I become knowledgable in the humanities and social science? I already have a chart for philosophy.

What are the charts for
>Literature
>History
>Anthropology
>Political science
>Economics
>Sociology
>Geography
>Psychology

I am looking to start from a general overview of the subject and then narrow down on a particular interest that I will develop. For example, with Philosophy, I will start with 'A new history of western philosophy' by Anthony Kenny and for political philosophy, 'An introduction to Political Philosophy' by Jonathan Wolff. Another example would be for history, 'The story of civilisation' by William Durant

Is doing an A level in English Literature worth it? I'm 20 btw.
