I really am surprised that Madame Bovary has not been more popular on /lit/ in the past, and I'm glad that it seems to finally be getting the recognition on this board that it deserves.

It's a brilliant work, an incredible character study. And, if you want to hate women, this book will make you LOATHE them. Emma is everything you have been warned about when it comes to women.

The moral judgments in Madame Bovary ignore every principle except that of the artist who violates and dwells on every human action. Some people revel in the way Madame Bovary depicts love, taking it for a sound criticism of romantic rubbish, put forward by a robust conscience, and they do not see that this robust conscience is nothing more than a close scrutiny and a showy parade of sordid human emotions. How could one live on the lines of Madame Bovary? In one way only: by aping the artist shut up indoors.
Be careful not to take seriously Flaubert's reviews of reality. They are based on no other principle but this: all is filth, except the conscientious artist.

Thoughts on Madame Bovary? Just finished, and I didn't like it, to be honest. Maybe it's because it reminds me of /r9k/-style misogyny so much?

I just finished Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary."

I thought I would feel a lot more pity or sympathy for the main character, Emma, but I actually felt a lot more sorry for her husband.

What is /lit/'s opinion and musings on this novel?

Books that you feel should not be labeled classics.

Madam Bovary and pretty much all other books that center around romantic frustration, such as The Sorrows of Young Werther. It's like someone made facebook, the book. So much retarded drama.

Am I going to miss much if I just find a plot summary of this somewhere, /lit/? I feel like it's the single worst, must dreadfully slow piece of 'literature' I've read in a long time, and I suffered through A Room of One's Own.

I've been reading Madame Bovary for an English class but I've been bogged down by how boring the book is despite Flaubert being a great at describing stuff; the story still falls on the dull side.

Anyways, I need to write an essay on this book but I cant find any motifs of symbols that are simple enough to write an easy essay.

Any have suggestions on something to discuss on this book or even an essay YOU may have written so I can poach it?

thanks
