I took classes of both, and I'm not even particularly interested in their culture. I had the opportunity in my otherwise quite empty (business) curriculum and took it.
I took a year and a half of Japanese classes, and nothing remains now. Contrary to what my teacher told me, I would advise you to completely avoid grammar and focus on learning a fuckton of Kanjis. This will remain in your head for decades, and helps a lot.
I am now learning Russian for around a year. It's great.
I'm convinced 99% of the languages are not actually "hard" to learn. It's all about dumbly studying really, and accepting to suffer mentally. But it's not hard like math or even philosophy can be. It's just an iterative process of learning shit slowly.

how do you guys cope with the temptation to commit tsundoku? in the digital era, its extremely tempting to just go on libgen and download pdfs in bulk that you might simply never get around to reading because its indtsntly gratifying. I find myself falling into that temptation fairly often, but it ends up causing me stress when I simply can't find a pdf that I'm interested in that exact second.

I think this is caused by an inner drive to "collect" as much knowledge as humanly possible, which is an unrealistic goal. Anyone else here experience something similar?

OK, I'll keep that in mind for a possible short story. But I'm writing YA and I'd rather focus on something simple and digestible to a normie audience.

Who do these self-appointed Internet writing gurus think they're fooling?

This is now a Goodreads friends thread. Post your profile so we can find likeminded patricians whose accomplishments and status updates encourage us to continue the reading habit instead of spending all quarantine masturbating. And maybe generate some interesting discussion too.

I like literature, poetry, literary fiction, philosophy, history, pretty much anything else in the humanities, and some STEM. Currently reading IJ and listening to an audiobook about Stalin.

I’m mostly interested in western philosophy, but I want some basic knowledge of eastern and islamic philosophy. If I were to read just one book on each, which should it be? I’d rather read a surface-level book that is comprehensive than a particular infuential work.

If i steal some things from a cririque thread, put it in my otherwise self-written book and it becomes popular, would anyone know? Would there be any consequences?
