get an anthology of English poetry, then an anthologies of French and German poetry (you should speak these two languages, and Italian would also helps), then read the Greeks and the Latins, then Dante, Leopardi, Pushkin, Tagore

>should they be read in chronological order?
No. This only kind of makes sense for some of the modernists like Pound and Eliot, but if you’re only just getting into poetry, it will be a lot more fruitful to just focus on what you like. Pic related is a chart of the most popular poets on /lit/ based on a poll a few months back. I’d recommend just perusing a few of the most famous works of some of the poets here and seeing what speaks to you. Then just follow your interests.

And since you asked for works, my personal favorite poem by far is Four Quartets by Eliot, especially Burnt Norton and Little Gidding. I’ve spent many enjoyable hours reading and rereading these or, especially, listening to Alec Guinness’ recording of them.
