Huh. You’re right. I always said dad stands for death abandonment divorce. I’ve been acutely aware of my daddy issues, but I guess it’s a blind spot when it comes to the media I consume. Thanks anon.

I'm sorry to be making a recommendation thread, but I read through the Wiki and didn't exactly find what I needed.

I want to read a book that captures a specific feeling. Problem is, I'm not even sure what that is. I've been dealing with depression for years now (recently seeing someone). I have had my struggles with being used, manipulated and abandoned by others because of it, along with your typical coming-of-age issues. I guess I want something of a similar nature, but I'd also like it to be hopeful and possibly inspiring and thought provoking. Would you please help me with finding a book like this?

Last quarter I had to meet my English professor at the campus Starbucks to discuss a paper coming up. I showed up on time and waited for about ten minutes, but he still hadnt shown up. While waiting (and about to leave), a friend of mine showed up with another girl I didnt know. My friend was the TA for my set theory course I was taking that quarter, and they were discussing something or other about it.
I decided to butt in and introduce myself.

"Hey, so you have an interest in set theory?"
>mhm
"Thats cool, hopefully you can get into the course next year, since its the first part in a year long series"
>Im already taking the course
"Oh, friend X, I didnt know there was another set theory course this quarter?"
"There isnt"
"oh, so youre in my class?"
>I sit behind you every class
"Oh."

We then talked about anime, and made plans to meet up in LA over Christmas break.

I didnt get her number

/lit/, Ive wanted to make a thread about this for a while but it would probably be better to just ask here (thanks OP).

So I dont study trends and movements much in literature and the arts, and I barely do it in philosophy. Just recently I began noticing on my own "modernist" patterns in literature, looked up and bam, realized there may be something in listening to others titles and criteria that at first glance just seem vain.

Whats the deal with post-modernism and its reactionaries? Ive read the wiki and all that but this doesnt seem to be a concept that anyone agrees on (again im naive as hell, might not just notice the majority over vocal minorities). How do they define irony? Why is irony so important in dealing with grand narratives?

I mean, I agree that these "objective" narratives are simple and childish, and that we should be able to accept a plurality of truth? But why the irony? Why the hell cant you just accept that our old goal posts and utopias were places we couldnt reach in the first place?
