ex-Catholic here, been out of the Church's influence for 15 years. But, before I was 18yo, I was taught, among other things, that:
- the Bible was /inspired/ by God, therefore, prone to unusual or inapplicable doctrines or mistakes. That its teachings could only be interpreted, and should be respected but not followed like the fucking law.
- That God forgives no matter how big the offence, so no real problem with misinterpreting the Bible in the end of times (eventually) if you are truly sorry
- That Hell and Heaven are not physical layers of reality, one with fire, another with angels.
- That the Big Bang theory and Darwinism do not necessarily imply God's non-existence.
- That 'our' God was not exclusive and it could have represented himself in different forms to other religions and cultures in other times, therefore they were all worthy of respect and that OUR GOD was simply wrong
- That I could have been a priest (yeah, I 'heard' his calling nonstop for a full month when I was 16yo)

All in all, it was kinda contradictory, which is why it never felt right. All the stuff about the fear of god, its silly notions of sex, etc., were the reasons why I eventually left.
My fondest memory is how it instilled in me this bottomless pool of empathy for those in need or in pain (which was always there tbh), and some humanistic and metaphysical notions, I later explored reading philosophy and history.
