The primary users of insulin are type 1 diabetics, not type 2. Most type 2 diabetics just take their pills. The really fat ones need insulin too, though.

I got type 1 last year and I've been /fit/ my entire life. Type 2 is the landwhales, type 1 is an autoimmune disease. Some examples of other type 1 diabetics: olympic swimmer Gary Hall Jr. and NFL quarterback Jay Cutler.

Type 1 diabetics need to inject insulin daily or they will die quickly. You would also die within insulin; the difference is you have not had an autoimmune disease attack your pancreas and prevent it from making insulin.

Human insulin was originally patented at $1 by Frederick Banting. It is quite inexpensive to make. This is not a free marketplace, there is obvious collusion to increase the price of the drug.

It's like if pharmaceutical companies stole a patent for water and prevented anyone from making water except for them. They are free to raise the price because there is no competition, even though it would be easy for another company to produce water at significantly lower costs.
