Say- how entertaining are the LOTR novels, for one who already saw the flicks sometime in his life?

So, here's my problem. I've spent the last four or so years creating a realistic yet fantastical world for a story (most likely novel form) to take place in, but I have no compelling/interesting story.
I have everything. Geology, Theology, Politics, History, Monarchy, Culture, Foods, Combat, Military, Music, Contraband, Laws, Countries, Peoples, Fauna, Possible Future and Folklore.
I don't have characters or story. I dabbled with a vengeance-driven female character but had to drop it as I don't have enough experience to write a female lead and the vengeance-character is widely overdone. I also wanted to stray clear of noble characters, as it's overdone, and I feel I'd write it very similar to aSoIaF. But I'm finding it difficult to come up with a commoners tale.
Any pointers or hints would be widely appreciated.
I DON'T want suggestions for stories. As I have posted this question before and thats what I received. I want hints on how to come up with it.
Help a brother out?
