Is submitting to literary journals that offer no payment worth it for a writer who is unpublished, but hoping to publish in quality literary magazines?

In other words, is being published in an unheard of, nonpaying magazine just a waste of time? If a 'real' lit magazine sees that you've published before in nonpaying markets, is that essentially the same as not being published at all?
