In person the stakes are personal. It's easier to delude yourself about other people, especially if you have a biological incentive to be their "friend". People have hope that they have a future with the other person, not even romantic, but enough to give the benefit of the doubt. Nearly nobody looks past this emotional and societal facade.

So yeah, by personal interactions you can delude yourself into liking others. Or even by online interactions, lots of cam whores and pornstars have beta orbiters.
