yes. new sincerity took the guise of the sjw movement. they have found, as dfw put it, "single entendre principles": the furthering of diversity, universal health care, environmentalism, and enforced equality.

you may not like it, i may not like it, but the age of the kooky postmodern "nothing really matters, lol" philosophy has finally died. starting with obama and continuing into trump everything seems to "matter" now.

His essays are pretty easy reads, but Infinite Jest is difficult. It's long, has chapters with unusual dialogue that aren't really critical to the main plot (Wardine be cry), and constantly requires the reader to flip back and forth between the main text and the footnotes. On top of that, some of the vocabulary and jargon in the text is unusual or highly specific. I haven't read The Pale King, but a long, unfinished tome about tax employees doesn't sound like a breezy read through The Hobbit, either.

What's even stranger is when other media (The Simpsons, for example, with television) denounce themselves as vapid and uphold reading books as a more honorable source of entertainment.

Actually I'm pretty sure DFW wrote an essay about this very subject which was pretty cool.

"The fuzzy Hensonian epiclete Ovid the Obtuse, syndicated chronicler of trans-human entertainment exchange in low-cost organs across the land, mythologizes the origins of the ghostly double that always shadows human figures on UHF broadcast bands thus:"

So did anyone actually read and enjoy his short stories are are we all pretending? His non-fiction is good though.

We've all had a good laugh with postmodernism. Really. The irony allowed us to see the absurdities within contemporary American culture. That was fun and all. But isn't it time we stopped the gag?

Let's all go back to writing stories with actual plot and character development. Let's go back to looking for good prose.

POMO was fun while it lasted but I think we're all a little exhausted by now, right?

/lit/, which one of you has been sending questions in to The Paris Review?

>I always tell people that my favorite book is Infinite Jest, and even though I haven’t gotten halfway through it, it’s still the best half of a book that I have ever read! Do you have any guilt from unread books floating around?

If you haven't already, check out DFW's other nonfiction collection: "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again." The title essay, and the Illinois State Fair essay, are fantastic. Funny and insightful.
