If you're interested in something a bit more /sci/, this book is a great look into how we think consciousness actually works, I thought of it when you mentioned forming something out of perceptions that's more than the sum of its parts, that's in here
it's a bretty kino read too, it takes you through the experiments and by the end you actually feel like you learned something significant (which of course, you did!)
not very long and you don't need and info going into it
